USAF Logistics Evolves to Meet Change In Weapons Technology

Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio—Air Force logistics is undergoing a persistent, profound evolution from a system of manually operated, geographically oriented, all-purpose depots into a slimmed-down, automated system of specialized, operations-oriented support centers.

Joint Panels Smooth Gaps in Interface

Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio—Two potentially difficult interface areas are met by the Air Force Logistics Command at opposite poles of its operational world. One is with the Air Force Systems Command, which is responsible for acquisition of the weapon systems that the Logistics Command must provision and support.

Depot Closings Reflect Support Trends

Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio—Five hard core Air Materiel Areas will comprise the major depot structure of the Air Force Logistics Command after phase out of the Rome Air Materiel Area in 1967 and Middletown, Mobile, and San Bernardino facilities scheduled to take place by 1969.

Logistics in Phase-Out

Logistics functions continue long after actual weapon phase-out, and the Logistics Command devotes considerable effort to finding uses for spares for such equipment. Nearly $100 million worth of Jupiter missile equipment and supplies were transferred to other programs after Jupiter bases in Italy and Turkey were closed, for example.

Missions Cover Wide Field

Missions assigned to the Logistics Command sometimes extend beyond the Command itself—as in various legal tasks—or into less familiar support areas. One of the latter is the disposal of surplus aircraft and equipment, done by the 2704th Air Force Aircraft Storage and Disposition Group at Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz.

Audits Scan Replenishment Spare Quality

Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio—Verification of contract specification accuracy and adequacy, and sampling of replenishment spare parts from a new industry source prior to production are two steps under way in Air Force Logistics Command procurement to improve quality of products.

Competitive Coding System Use Expands

Screening of 6,200 items in the AN/FPS-24 radar system under the Air Force Logistics Command Competition With Confidence system has been proposed by General Electric’s Heavy Military Electronics Dept. The proposal calls for categorization of the items for suitability for competitive procurement under the coding system adopted by the command earlier this year (AW&ST June 22, p. 73).

New Techniques Focus on Pipeline Times

Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio—Austere provisioning as a way of life for Air Force Logistics Command carries with it the necessity to project requirements more accurately and compress the supply pipeline to the using command. Pipeline time now for priority 1-8 class requisitions is about seven days in the continental U. S. For the lower priority items, it is 18-24 days.

Logair Demonstrates Value of Air Cargo In USAF Support Operations

Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio—Reduction in pipeline times for USAF support is the subject of development and management effort in transportation that ranges from pilot test of an automated warehouse to evaluation of new air cargo services or aircraft with potential for faster or more efficient delivery.
