Mariner 4 Nearing Final Mission Hurdles

Pasadena—Mariner 4 spacecraft appears to be in generally excellent condition for its July 14 encounter with Mars, but the success of photography and other scientific experiments near the planet depends on certain unknowns and on the resolution of knotty logic sequencing problems, complicated by the communications lag caused by extreme distance from the earth.

Titan 3 Program Involves Five Major Incentive Fee Contracts

Cape Kennedy — Bonus incentive fees amounting to $1.1 million for four prime contractors for the USAF Titan 3C were riding on the first launch of the vehicle, successfully carried out at Cape Kennedy June 18. Unlike incentives for later launches in the program, these were contingent on meeting all flight objectives. This provision, designed to encourage cooperation among the contractors, meant that a failure in any one contractor’s area of responsibility lost incentives entailed in this flight for all the contractors involved.

Europeans Pushing Joint Missile Efforts

Paris—Trend toward intra-European cooperation in the missile field was much in evidence for the first time at the recent Paris Air Show, despite the absence of any representation of the main international development, the Anglo-French AS-37 air-to-ground guided missile.

New Business Aircraft Given Paris Debut

Paris—General aviation, once a hallmark of the Paris Air Show, was pushed into the background this year by the enormity of the biannual display, although several business aircraft—including three jets—made their debuts. With the feature positions in the flying displays given to larger military and civil transports, light aircraft exhibitors had to settle for a 3-4 min. flight in the early morning hours.

Icelandair Ordering First Jet Transport

Reykjavik, Iceland—One of this small republic’s two international airlines is about to order its first jet transport. The other carrier will stretch its turboprop airliners, but is in no hurry to acquire jets. Both Icelandair, the prospective jet purchaser, and Loftleidir Icelandic Airlines reported at their recent annual general meetings here that 1964 had been profitable.

Until I read Mr. Cecil Brownlow’s editorial on The Problem in Vietnam, June 7 (p. 11), my impression was that your magazine’s editorial attitude was completely in favor of the military approach as a solution to the international problems of Southeast Asia.

Facilities for Titan 3 Keyed to Short-notice Launchings

Cape Kennedy—Basic Air Force assumption in designing the Titan 3 Integrate-Transfer-Launch (ITL) facilities here was that U.S. military crews eventually would be required to fly into space frequently and on short notice to intercept, examine and possibly destroy hostile space vehicles.

Los Angeles—Crew of a Pan American World Airways Boeing 707-321B was able to maintain control and effect a safe emergency landing at Travis AFB June 28 following inflight fire and separation of the No. 4 engine with consequent loss of 25 ft. of the right wing.

Single Sideband Radios Urged on Airlines

Washington—Federal Aviation Agency is trying to interest the airlines in converting to single sideband (SSB) radio for long-range air-ground communications. But this effort may be hurt by a recent Communications Satellite Corp. proposal for discussion of a satellite system to perform the same function, operating on VHF frequencies.
