Lift Fans Gain Favor for Vtol Aircraft
Development of lift-fan engines for V/STOL aircraft is progressing rapidly, although there is some controversy over their most appropriate use. The major disagreement is whether lift-fans—generally pancake-shaped, highbypass-ratio fans that augment the thrust of a VTOL aircraft’s main, cruise engine during hover—are suitable for supersonic aircraft or whether their optimum use is on aircraft designed to fly at Mach 0.8 or less.
