Vertical Air Drafts Cited in 720b Crash

Northwest Airlines, Inc., Boeing 720B, N724US, operating as Flight 705, crashed in an unpopulated area of the Everglades National Park, 37 mi. west-southwest of Miami International Airport at approximately 1350 EST, on Feb. 12, 1963. All 35 passengers and the crew of eight were fatally injured.

Washington—Important improvements in the Navy’s space surveillance system (Navspasur), scheduled to go into operation within six months, will increase its detection range and enhance its accuracy against low-flying Soviet satellites.

Usaf Plans Attempt to Transmit Radio Signals Between Satellites

Bedford, Mass.—Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories scientists will attempt this month for the first time to transmit radio signals from one satellite to another halfway around the world. A Thor-Agena launch vehicle fired from USAF Western Test Range will be used to place a “mother” satellite into a roughly circular polar orbit at an altitude of approximately 180 mi. A radio transmitting package will be separated from the mother satellite with a velocity that will place it approximately 18,400 mi. away in five days.
