Mountain View, Calif.—Excellent results of the Pioneer 6 mission demonstrate the value of separating flights designed to gather data on the interplanetary medium from those aimed specifically at investigating a certain planet. Scientists at Ames Research Center, which is managing the Pioneer project here for National Aeronautics and Space Administration, said the past melding of interplanetary and encounter sciences often has resulted in ambiguous and sometimes incorrect data.
