A Flying Tiger Line Inc., L-1049H, N6915C, operating as Flight 282, crashed on Sweeney’s Ridge, approximately 4.3 mi. west-southwest of the San Francisco International Airport at approximately 0031:30 PST. The three crew members were fatally injured. There were no passengers.

E-2a Controls Navy North Vietnam Strikes

Washington—Airborne tactical data system (ATDS) of the Grumman E-2A Hawkeye twin-turboprop early-warning aircraft now is being used to monitor and control virtually all Navy air strikes over North Vietnam. Working with the E-2A, Navy aircraft have been completing approximately 95% of their assigned sorties.

What Next in Space?

My concern about emphasis in our future space activities was reinforced after a careful review of NASA’s “future plans” presentations to both the Senate and House space committees this past year. They did an admirable job in identifying alternatives—but an inescapable conclusion on my part is that the principal theme of these presentations was “alternatives for constructing a manned space program.”

New Gemini Objectives Transcend Apollo Support Role

Washington—Operational capability of the McDonnell Gemini spacecraft will be expanded on the program’s last two flights with the addition of new objectives transcending the primary role of Apollo lunar mission support. Over-all success of Gemini 10, despite the need to revise the flight profile constantly (AW&ST July 25, p. 26), is encouraging program planners to seek support from National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials to permit them to: Attempt tethered cartwheeling of the Gemini 11 and its Agena 11 target vehicle to induce artificial gravity.
