In-flight Simulator Considered for Sst

Washington-Development of a variable-stability aircraft as an in-flight simulator is being considered by a joint government study group for evaluating the flying qualities of large advanced aircraft. Known as a total in-flight simulator (TIFS) and based upon a proposal submitted by the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, the TIFS underscores advances required in training equipment needed for future aircraft.

Bac 111, Dc-9 Competing in Island Rivalry

Honolulu—Hawaii’s two local airlines are pitting the Douglas DC-9 and British Aircraft Corp. BAC 111 against each other in a side-by-side, island-hopping competition that is generating worldwide interest from the airline industry. Representatives of carriers interested in one or both of the aircraft are visiting Hawaii to watch, under nearly perfect laboratory conditions, as Hawaiian Airlines’ two DC-9s and Aloha Airlines’ two BAC 111s compete over an inter-island route system in which the long-haul flight is 216 mi. and the shortest jet segment is 45 mi.

Rail Extension to Speed Cleveland Traffic

Cleveland—Construction is progressing here on a four-mile extension of the rapid transit system to Cleveland Hopkins Airport. Completion of the $14.2-million project (AW&ST Oct. 25, 1965, p. 185) is scheduled for late 1967. It is expected to ease substantially the pressure on major traffic arteries between the airport and the downtown area and in growing suburban and industrial areas.

Wichita—Cessna Aircraft Co. is broadening its multi-engine business aircraft line with two medium-size twins— Model 401 for company and personal use and Model 402 for the fast-growing air taxi/cargo market. Carrying a basic retail price of $96,-500, the new aircraft are planned to fill a gap between airplanes costing $50,000-$80,000 and those in the $110,000 class (basic prices).
