Major Role in Electronic Air War Earned By Radar Chaff
Los Angeles—American aircraft are increasing the use of chaff, one of the oldest techniques for confusing enemy radar defenses, as part of the quickening pace of electronic warfare over North Vietnam. The practice of confusing enemy radar operators and masking the presence of bombers by dispensing from attacking aircraft large quantities of metal foil, or chaff, cut to lengths resonant at the defense radar frequency to return spurious radar returns, dates back to the now famous Royal Air Force raid on Hamburg in 1943.
