Devices Gain Growing Weapons Role

Los Angeles-Laser-guided weapons and laser-directed munitions delivery and gunfire are emerging from the war in Vietnam as a surprisingly effective and relatively inexpensive innovation in airborne weapons delivery. The success of many laser-related techniques in southeast Asia and others now in trial at Eglin AFB and elsewhere presage widespread use of laser designators/ rangefinders in at least those permissive military environments that characterize air warfare over South Vietnam and to a lesser degree prevailed over North Vietnam where the United States maintained air superiority.

A Military Viewpoint

And yet, as you go out “toward the unexplored,” to solve for a hundred unknown Xs, it appears that many of our countrymen have no more taste or heart for new horizons and new frontiers. They unite with awe and pride, it is true, when the first man sets foot on the moon—but may grow impatient if further missions should happen to interrupt a football telecast.
