New York-Surge of advanced bookings for the peak North Atlantic market summer months could culminate in transatlantic airlines for the first time carrying over one million passengers in both July and August. The 26 transatlantic airlines will have over 1,000 flights weekly this summer, about the same as the high season for 1969.

Improvement Program for 747 Concentrates on Doors, Engines

Engines and cargo and passenger doors are at the head of the list as Boeing strives to improve the schedule reliability of its 747 by resolving a variety of problems that have surfaced during the early months of operation. In addition to attacking immediate problems that are causing delays, Boeing and Pratt & Whitney are seeking longer-term improvements in the JT9D-3 engine to improve fuel consumption and increase climb thrust.

747 Draws High Passenger Loads

Encouraging evidence of the Boeing 747’s passenger appeal has accumulated during the early months of the giant jet era while efforts to improve the engine and ease some snags in food service and baggage handling continue. Statistics gathered by Boeing during the first three months show impressive loads were carried by the 747—including surprisingly high patronage in first class—while the aircraft was recording schedule reliability just under 90%.
