London—Lift fan technology is moving into areas of application for improvement of short takeoff and landing qualities and of engineering refinements to reduce noise. Prime engine candidate for use in vertical takeoff and landing aircraft is the Rolls-Royce RB.202-31 advanced lift fan engine, which is planned for use in the proposed Hawker Siddeley HS-141 V/STOL jet transport (AW&ST May 11, p. 61).
