Experts Predict Long, Costly Fuel Effort

Monterey, Calif.—Combination of conventional and advanced energy sources probably will enable the U. S. to meet its domestic energy needs through the year 2000 while achieving greater independence from unreliable foreign oil sources.

Planet Jupiter Consists of Liquid Hydrogen

Washington—Planet Jupiter is a gigantic sphere of liquid hydrogen without any detectable solid surface except for possibly a small, perhaps molten, rocky core thousands of miles below its turbulent cloud tops. Findings from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Pioneer 10 indicate Jupiter is far too hot to have solidified, with temperatures at its core of about 54,000F, six times the temperature on the surface of the sun.

Fea Proposal Spurs Industry In-fighting

Washington—Federal Energy Administration’s moves to modify aviation fuel controls substantially (AW&ST Aug. 19, p. 29) have provoked bitter in-fighting in the Western World air transportation industry that could severely impair long-term ability of the airlines to solve mutual problems adequately.

Farnborough Flying Displays

Weather Fails to Deter Demonstrations

Farnborough—Hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and low ceilings affected flying displays at this year’s Farnborough air show, though a number of impressive performances turned up in spite of these factors. The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle fighter flown by McDonnell Douglas test pilot Irving L. Burrows drew the most interest during the daily afternoon flying displays, especially when the ceiling rose high enough or a sufficient number of holes appeared in the cloud cover to allow Burrows to demonstrate the vertical climb capabilities of the F-15 with its excess thrust-to-weight ratio.

Soviets Developing 'tanker' Spacecraft

Soviet Union is developing unmanned spacecraft “tankers” that would rendezvous with manned or unmanned Salyut space station vehicles to replenish their consumables and prolong their useful life in orbit. The Soyuz 15 cosmonauts were unable to dock with the Salyut 3 reconnaissance spacecraft Aug. 27 because of a malfunction in a fully automatic rendezvous and docking system being tested for use by the Soyuzlike tanker vehicles under development.
