Aerospace export business has emerged as the key to survival at the same time that an expanding global market has sent sales soaring to record volume and into new areas. This comes during a period when domestic markets for both military and commercial hardware are leveling or diminishing in most major aerospace manufacturing countries.

True Administration view of air transport’s value may have been revealed in a Federal Energy Administration program to spend $100,000 to evaluate strategies for shifting intercity travelers from cars and aircraft to buses and trains. Aerospace Corp. of El Segundo, Calif., under the FEA contract, will examine possible means of getting more people out of cars and off airlines, such as “rail and bus fare subsidies, air fare surcharges, curtailment of air service” and improved bus and rail schedules.

Paris—Thirty-first Paris air show opened last week in an atmosphere further emphasizing the trend that began a few years ago from a public-oriented, carnival-type exhibition to a hard-sell professionally-oriented display of the latest aerospace hardware and technology from throughout the world.

Big Hikes in Pavilion Prices Predicted

Paris—Prices for exhibit space at the U. S. pavilion at the Paris air show had to be raised for the 1975 show, but much stiffer increases—from 100% to as much as 600% or 700%—may be in store for future years. The reason is a 25% cut imposed in the Commerce Dept.’s export promotion funds by the Office of Management and Budget in the Fiscal 1976 budget now before Congress.

Swedish Missile

Paris—Swedish government is expected to decide this summer whether to start development of the new Saab Scania 372 infrared-guided air-to-air missile planned for the interceptor version of the Viggen. The weapon is designed as a highly maneuverable compromise between short-range dogfight and mediumrange requirements.
