Full-Scale Development F-16A in First Flight
USAF/General Dynamics first F-16A full-scale development air combat fighter made its initial flight here Dec. 8 with company test pilot Neil R. Anderson at the controls. The aircraft had rolled out here Oct. 20 (AW&ST Oct. 25, p. 19). The 1-hr. 10-min. first flight included a climb to 15,000 ft., where the landing gear was cycled and Anderson operated the Pratt & Whitney F100-PW100 turbofan at a variety of throttle settings to evaluate engine response performance at that altitude, attaining a maximum speed during the first flight of Mach 0.9 and maneuvering the airplane through 3g.
