Scientists Prepare to Revive Vikings

Pasadena, Calif.—Ambitious Viking extended mission will begin later this month when controllers here at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory revive the orbiters and landers from a 45-day conjunction “sleep.” The four Viking spacecraft were placed on reduced operational status in mid-November for the duration of solar conjunction, the period when Mars moves behind the sun in relation to earth (AW&ST Nov. 8, p. 17).

Los Angeles—Rockwell International has aligned its USAF B-1 bomber development program for a rapid transition into full-scale production. Planning began well before the Defense Dept. last week allocated funds for procurement of the first three operational aircraft, full production tooling and long lead-time items for the next lot of eight aircraft.

Marines to Test New Surveillance Radar

Washington—First completely solid-state, phased-array, three-dimensional air-surveillance radar, the TPS-59, soon will begin Marine Corps evaluation tests at Camp Pendleton, Calif. If the TPS-59 meets its design objectives of high performance and reliability, the Marine Corps plans to buy 12 operational radars, beginning in Fiscal 1979.
