Japan Resists U. S. Push to Boost Defense Funds

Tokyo—Despite continuous and strong U. S. urging to increase its defense effort, Japan has agreed only to keep its defense expenditures at 0.9% of its gross national product, or a level of $9.5 billion for fiscal 1980. Although this is 6.5% higher than last year, defense leaders consider it insufficient because of soaring inflation and energy costs.
