Myopia on Exports
A political brouhaha over whether the chairman of the Export-Import Bank rammed through an overly favorable loan to Ansett Airlines of Australia is resurrecting controversy over export financing of U. S. commercial aircraft. That controversy has usually arrayed the Treasury Dept., on one side, which claims U. S. commercial aircraft are so preeminent technically that they do not need any special export financing incentives, and the industry, on the other, which contends competition is tough and financing is an essential weapon in the marketing arsenal.
