London —Acceptance of performance management systems as a standard airborne aid for airline flightcrews is helping them take more effective steps toward optimizing aircraft operation and reducing fuel consumption. Designed to provide a means of computing and selecting flight parameters to achieve maximum economy, as well as a means for evaluating in-flight operating options, the systems couple to automatic flight controls and autothrottles, maintaining optimum pitch control and power settings and minimizing jockeying of thrust levers.

Washington—Federal Aviation Administration will issue cockpit windscreen visibility guidelines for designers of transport category aircraft to improve the ability of pilots to avoid midair collisions. The proposed advisory circular adopts the Society of Automotive Engineers Aerospace Standard 580B as the minimum field of visibility pilots need to avoid collisions.
