A variety of semiconductor technologies and architectural approaches have been proposed by the nine companies and industrial teams competing for three to five Phase l contracts to be awarded this spring to design and fabricate very complex-function microcircuits under the Defense Dept.’s very high speed integrated circuit (VHSIC) program.

Seattle—Bolstered by recent sales, Boeing Co.’s new airplane programs are entering on schedule an intense period of manufacturing and testing activity highlighted by early flight testing of engines for both transports. The company’s 767 twin-aisle twinjet, approaching an Aug. 4 planned rollout, is in the best sales position of any Boeing program at this point in its schedule, the company claims.
