Clearing the Air

The emotional stew that U. S. air traffic controllers have been gradually warming over the years in a series of slowdowns finally boiled over into a full-scale strike. Dire as it was in prospect, in actuality it was so ineffective the first week in shutting down the U.S. airline network that controllers overseas felt obliged to butt in with their own boycotts to preserve their prerogatives as self-appointed czars of the world's airways.

Military Aid Swells at Towers, Centers

Washington — Federal Aviation Administration expected that 800-900 military air traffic controllers would be manning towers and air traffic control centers in the U.S. by the end of last week. Federal officials said that as many as 2,000 military controllers eventually could be assigned to civilian duty.
