Airline Schedules Reengining of Its 747s

Johannesburg—South African Airways is scheduled to reengine five of its Boeing 747-200B transports with the new Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7R4G2 turbofan engine, rated at 54,750 lb. of thrust, beginning in 1983. This move by the national carrier of the Republic of South Africa reflects the airline’s continuing effort to increase the performance of its existing fleet of aircraft.

Bitburg AB, Germany— Three Air Force/McDonnell Douglas F-15 air-superiority fighter squadrons based in this hilly Eifel region are operationally controlled by Allied Air Forces Central Europe for air defense intercepts. The three F-15 units—the 22nd, 53rd and 525th Tactical Fighter Squadrons — are the core of the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing headquartered here.
