Washington—Space shuttle Mission 6 extravehicular activity by astronauts F. Story Musgrave and Donald H. Peterson is to verify basic shuttle EVA capability by doing many tasks planned originally for the Mission 5 EVA, which was canceled because of suit problems (AW&ST Dec. 6, 1982, p. 25).

Usaf Studies Fighters for Dual-role, All-weather Operations

Washington—The Air Force plans to invest approximately $473 million over the next five years to develop a dual-role tactical fighter derivative capable of night, allweather air-to-air and air-to-surface combat operations. The service is engaged in a multipurpose comparative flight evaluation of modified General Dynamics F-16 and McDonnell Douglas F-15 fighters.

Extended Upper Deck 747 Shows Fuel Gains in Flight

Everett, Wash.—Flight tests with the Boeing 747-300 transport show that the aircraft is faster than expected and is achieving fuel efficiency as good as or better than anticipated, the company said last week. The company also conducted evacuation tests recently on the wide-body transport with the extended upper deck that it hopes will lead to approval of a highdensity, short-range version that could seat up to 660 passengers.

Military Preparing Data for Mx Basing Study

Washington—Technical study data for the MX advanced intercontinental ballistic missile basing modes are being updated and prepared by the Defense Dept, and the Air Force to support a White House study mandated by Congress. The Reagan Administration is forced to reexamine a number of basing options because of amendments in the House and Senate that deleted or withheld a large share of Fiscal 1983 MX funding in the second continuing resolution action in the lame duck session.
