Transition at Paris

Intermittent, dull clouds shrouded Le Bourget airport and chill winds more like March than May buffeted visitors at the opening of the Paris air show. The weather matched the tempo of the show. It was the quietest opening of the Paris air show in the memory of veterans at the display.

Swedes Award JAS 39 Gripen Contracts

Paris—European subsystem manufacturers last week won a large share of the contracts awarded for the Saab-Scania JAS 39 Gripen advanced strike fighter now under development in Sweden. About 30% of the aircraft will be built outside Sweden, including portions of the General Electric F404-GE-F1J1 engine, which was selected earlier (AW&ST NOV. 1, 1982, p. 27).

Grumman Receives Lavi Primary Subcontract

Paris—Israel Aircraft Industries last week selected Grumman Aerospace Corp. as primary subcontractor for composite materials development for the Lavi fighter aircraft. The Bethpage, N. Y., company will design, develop and build the fighter’s all-composite, bolt-on, wet wing and all-composite empennage.

Remote Map Readers

Paris—USAF has ordered two Mercator electronic remote map readers from France’s Thomson-CSF for delivery in 1984 and evaluation by Aeronautical Systems Div., Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. The system, which may be considered for new attack versions of the McDonnell Douglas F-15 or General Dynamics F-16, reads maps that are stored on 35-mm. photographic film.
