1984 Marks Second Consecutive Year of Profits for European Airlines

Brussels—Major European airlines earned an operating profit of $1.35 billion in 1984 and a net profit of about $650 million. The airlines’ 1983 profit of $230 million was the first profit since 1978. Profits in 1985 and 1986 are expected to be slightly higher, according to the Assn. of European Airlines.

Manufacturers Near $4 Billion in Transport Aircraft Sales Since May

Paris—Airlines have signed firm contracts for transport aircraft valued at nearly $4 billion since early May in one of the most concentrated periods of buying in airline history. Total orders are for at least 133 aircraft The airlines also took options for about 75 more aircraft.

Four European Nations Expect to Proceed with Efa Definition

Paris—Aerospace industrial partners in four European nations—Britain, West Germany, Italy and Spain—expect to begin work this summer on an 8-10-month project definition study for a European Fighter Aircraft (EFA). The four will issue a standing invitation to other nations in Europe to join the program.
