Washington—A Pentagon-sponsored technology team that visited eight Japanese electronics companies and two government research and development centers was “extremely impressed with the advanced technology base in electronics, electro-optics, opto-electronics and millimeter/microwaves,” according to its recently issued report.

Panavia Partners Consider Retrofitting Tornado Aircraft With Midlife Updates

Paris—Nine-month feasibility study for a series of “midlife updates” for the Panavia Tornado will be completed by November, and decisions by Germany, Britain and Italy to go ahead with the program are expected soon after. The three nations hope to develop a common military requirement for the updates by mid-1986.

Israelis Offer Combat-Proved Electronic Intelligence Hardware

Paris—Israel Aircraft Industries, Ltd., demonstrated at the 36th Paris air show electronic intelligence gathering equipment that was proved during actual combat and offered the equipment for sale in the export market. Demonstration of the Electronics Div.’s Stabilized Long-Range Observation System (Slos) for border patrol and maritime surveillance/reconnaissance missions consisted of taped video from the optical sensor shown to visitors at a reception and conference facility adjacent to the company’s public exhibit pavilion at Le Bourget.
