Europe’s New Competitiveness

Europe's aerospace industry is moving into a new phase in its evolution as the companies that comprise it complete work on their next generation of advanced technology systems. The projects, which have been pursued primarily as multinational efforts, are aimed at satisfying Europe’s domestic military and civilian requirements, but are becoming increasingly competitive with U. S. systems for global export sales because many are timed for earlier availability or are aimed at market niches not specifically covered by U. S. companies.

Washington—The White House is studying formation of a new national space policy in the wake of the significant budget and operational changes to the program resulting from the shuttle Challenger accident. In addition, the Defense Dept. this week is expected to complete changes to its Unified Space Command to provide more efficient management of military space operations.
