Voyager Flight Demonstrates Value Of All-Composite Aircraft Design

Edwards AFB, Calif.—Voyager pilots Richard G. Rutan and Jeana Yeager earned a place in aviation’s record book with the completion of their nine-day, nonstop, unrefueled flight around the world—a feat that demonstrated the viability of all-composite aircraft structures under extreme conditions ranging from a takeoff with wingtip-dragging fuel loads to severe turbulence en route.

Defense Dept. Seeks Launcher For SDI in Supplemental Budget

Washington—Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger has forwarded to Congress a $2.8-billion supplemental Defense Dept. budget request for Fiscal 1987 that includes $110 million for research and development of a new heavy-lift launch vehicle for the Strategic Defense Initiative.

Defense Dept., NASA Aid Voyager Communications

Mojave, Calif.—Voyager was able to communicate with mission control around the world through the use of Defense Dept. and NASA systems, and flight officials said the trip would not have been possible without this help. Two basic links were used to connect Voyager pilots Richard G. Rutan and Jeana Yeager to mission control center here: ■ Direct ultrahigh frequency (UHF) satellite link to the aircraft, using a handheld antenna in the cabin pointed at the nearest satellite.
