Columbia Deploys Syncom On LDEF Retrieval Mission

HOUSTON The five astronauts on board the space shuttle orbiter Columbia deployed one satellite and late last week were chasing another—one whose retrieval is expected to alter the way spacecraft are designed. The effort to overtake and capture the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) called for the most intricate shuttle maneuvers of any flight since the Challenger accident.

AOPA Urges Probe of FAA’s NAS Plan Management

WASHINGTON The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assn. has charged the FAA with “completely mismanaging” the National Airspace System plan and has called for a congressional investigation. Association President John L. Baker said “a full-scale congressional inquiry of the FAA’s management of the airways system, airways modernization and user’s tax dollars is warranted.” He pointed to escalating cost estimates, delays in implementation and unnecessarily complex technologies.
