WASHINTON The White House has ordered NASA to begin an intensive effort to obtain broader input from sources outside the agency—particularly from industry and the science community—for its studies on return missions to the Moon as a stepping stone to manned flights to Mars.

Columbia Crew Retrieves Ldef, Conducts Medical Experiments

HOUSTON The five astronauts on board Columbia performed medical experiments late last week after capturing an orbiting science satellite, the first large spacecraft designed for space shuttle retrieval. The shuttle orbiter and crew were preparing to return to Earth with the 10.5ton Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) in a night landing early Jan. 19.

WASHINGTON Air Force Systems Command is prepared to let funding for technology demonstration programs decline during the 1990s to preserve the command’s current level of effort in more basic research and technology development. The change affects priorities for allocating funds among the basic research, exploratory development and advanced technology development budget categories.

Superbird B Prepared for Shipment

SAN FRANCISCO Technicians at Ford Aerospace in Palo Alto, Calif., are shown as they prepare Superbird B for shipment by air to the Ariane launch center at Kourou, French Guiana. Launch is scheduled for Feb. 20. The satellite is owned by Space Communications Corp. of Japan, a company formed by Mitsubishi Corp., and is the second to be built by Ford.

The Boeing 727-232 has seven spoilers on each wing. The five outboard spoilers are flight spoilers and the inboard two are ground spoilers. The flight spoilers augment the ailerons in roll control and at the same time are available to act as an air drag device.
