Pratt to Ground Test Advanced Ducted Prop Demonstrator in 1991

HARTFORD, CONN. Pratt & Whitney and its partners will begin tests in late 1991 of an ultrahigh bypass, 50,000-lb.-thrust-class technology demonstrator engine that incorporates a single, geared, reversible-pitch fan that has a diameter of 120 in.

Rail-Launched HEDI Vehicle Makes First Flight; Test Terminated by Premature Warhead Separation

LANCASTER, CALIF. The first flight test of a rail-launched high endoatmospheric defense interceptor (HEDI) vehicle accomplished 9095% of its objectives, although the flight was cut short by premature warhead separation and explosion.

South Africa Rolls Out XH-2 Attack Helicopter

WASHINGTON South Africa’s Atlas Aircraft Corp. has rolled out its XH-2 Rooivalk (Kestral) combat support helicopter. The indigenous design attack helicopter has been under development since the early 1980s for the South African air force.

NTSB Assesses DFW Dept. of Safety’s Response to Crash of Delta Flight 1141

As part of the investigation into the crash of Flight 1141, an attempt was made to open the left side floor level exit door from outside the aircraft. The door would not open on the initial attempt. Debris on the floor inside the cabin adjacent to the exit door prevented the door from moving inward and forward as was required to position the door so it could swing outward.
