Canada Cuts Defense Spending Again; Reductions Are Smaller Than in 1989

BOSTON The Canadian government’s defense budget for the coming year calls for a $658 million (C) reduction in planned expenditures over the next five years, which will be added to $2.74 billion (C) in cuts identified in last year’s budget.

ESA Delays Development Decision For Hermes Manned Spaceplane

MUNICH The formal go-ahead for Europe’s Hermes program has been delayed by six months to July 1, 1991, but first flight of the spaceplane still is targeted for 1998. The decision to push back the European Space Agency’s approval of Phase 2 full-scale development is due to political and technical considerations, according to Jorg Feustel-Buechl, ESA’s director for space transportation systems.

NASA to Appoint Separate Managers For Space Station Construction, Utilization

WASHINGTON NASA plans to appoint a manager of space station utilization to act as an internal advocate for users of the manned base. Associate Administrator William B. Lenoir said the new manager will serve as a foil to the manager responsible for assembling the U. S./intemational facility, planned for completion by the year 2000.
