CAPE CANAVERAL The LACE/RME Strategic Defense Initiative Organization spacecraft was launched from Pad 17B here at 11:15 a. m. EST on Feb. 14, and 3 hr. later both satellites had been deployed into precise orbits. The satellites and related instrumentation are designed to validate ground-based laser technology over relatively long terms.

CH-46E Replacement May Be CH-46X; Marines Believe UH-60 Is Too Small

WASHINGTON The Marine Corps is analyzing a fourphase life extension and upgrade for its fleet of CH-46E assault helicopters as an alternative to the Pentagon’s plan to replace the aircraft with a derivative of the UH-60 Black Hawk. Candidates for the amphibious assault mission are under study because the Defense Dept, canceled the V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft program in last year’s budget cuts.

Paulson to Buy Gulfstream Aerospace, Learjet Corp.

WASHINGTON Allen E. Paulson and Forstmann Little & Co. are purchasing Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. for $825 million and have signed a letter of intent to acquire Leaijet Corp. for $60 million. Under terms of the Gulfstream agreement, the company is being bought for cash and is fully financed, according to a Gulfstream official.
