Operation Desert Storm, the multi-national offensive to oust Iraqi forces from Kuwait and smash Saddam Hussein’s ability to further threaten Middle East stability, is being covered by the media in real-time as no other war before. This is good and bad.

Eastern’s Sad Demise

When Eastern Airlines stopped flying Jan. 18, the U. S. lost a venerable institution. The time is past for finger-pointing or rooting under rocks to find the perpetrator of the mortal blow. Watching Eastern go deeper and deeper into debt during the past decade has been a wrenching experience, but too many irreversible factors made the shutdown the only logical decision.

OBITUARY

Maijorie Todd, former assistant editor of AVIATION WEEK & SPACE TECHNOLOGY, died in New York on Jan. 17. Ms. Todd had left the magazine in May, 1988, due to a medical disability, and retired in May, 1989. She joined Aviation Week in September, 1954, as a secretary. She was promoted to editorial assistant in 1962, and to assistant editor in 1972. Earlier in her career she had been employed by McDonnell Aircraft Co. in St. Louis.

ISRAEL TO CONTINUE ARROW TESTS

Israel Aircraft Industry expects to conduct another test of its Arrow antiballistic missile and to seek a next step contract “in the very near future” from the U. S. Strategic Defense Initiative Organization, according to IAI President Moshe Keret.

French Use Jaguar Fighter/Bombers To Strike Desert Storm Targets

French air force Jaguar fighter/bombers attacked key targets in Kuwait using laser-guided missiles, standard bombs and submunitions dispensers during the first week of Operation Desert Storm. Targets hit by the Jaguars in Kuwait included the Ahmed Al Jaber Air Base, a munitions depot, a naval base and artillery sites.

Kuwaiti Air Force Strikes Back at Iraq

EASTERN SAUDI ARABIA Kuwait’s air force is back in the air, and its A-4KU Skyhawks have successfully struck Iraqi targets in Kuwait in a series of raids. Eight Skyhawks landed at an airbase here after a strike on Jan. 23 with empty bomb racks, despite overcast skies that have hampered operations.

EASTERN SAUDI ARABIA Iraqi gunners have resorted to surrounding targets with antiaircraft fire, using everything from AK-47 assault rifles to heavy artillery following the devastation of Iraq’s air defense command and control system by allied forces, including USAF F-117A stealth aircraft.

Saudi Tornados Fly Most Attack Missions at Night

EASTERN SAUDI ARABIA Royal Saudi Air Force Tornados are flying almost all of their missions at night in the war to oust Iraq from Kuwait. Each flight involves refueling twice from RSAF/Lockheed KC-130 tankers, which is made more difficult by the darkness and the tankers’ slow speed.

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA Planning for Operation Desert Storm’s air strikes against Iraq is coordinated through the U. S. Central Command from its headquarters here in Riyadh. The daily missions flown by air forces from Desert Storm’s participating countries are combined in a common air tasking order.
