Army Eris Interceptor Destroys Dummy Warhead in Sdi Test

WASHINGTON An experimental ballistic missile interceptor, aided by radars and satellites, distinguished a mock incoming nuclear warhead from decoys and destroyed the target in space. In a Jan. 28 test, the interceptor, called Eris, was launched from the U. S. Army’s Kwajelein Atoll site in the Pacific Ocean to thwart an “attack” by a missile from Vandenberg AFB, Calif., more than 4,200 mi. away.
