IBM Wins Bid to Complete British Merlin ASW Helicopter

PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND The United Kingdom has selected IBM Corp. as prime contractor to complete development of the Merlin antisubmarine warfare helicopter program and to supply the Royal Navy with 44 helicopters. Under the prime contract from the Ministry of Defence, IBM will manage the remaining development work and integration of the mission system equipment, and deliver the helicopters to the navy to overall performance specifications on a certain schedule.

Boeing Ends Effort To Restart 707 Line

Boeing Co. has halted its efforts to restart the 707 production line, ending the possibility that any further E-3 airborne warning and control system aircraft will utilize new 707 airframes. The company is studying other Boeing aircraft as airframes for the AWACS and other military missions, and USAF has considered converting used 707 airframes as AWACS platforms (AW&ST Apr. 1, p. 81).
