WASHINGTON The U. S. Air Force faces an escalating competition for tactical aviation modernization funds as Congress tries to work out a compromise military authorization bill for Fiscal 1992. On one side is the General Dynamics F-16 multirole fighter, proposed by the Air Force for a final, 72-aircraft purchase during Fiscal 1992-93 to close out a production program that will not be equaled—well over 2,000 aircraft to the Air Force—in the foreseeable future.
