Production of First Global Venus Maps Signals Shift in Magellan Studies

PASADENA, CALIF The Magellan program’s study of Venus has shifted into a new, broader phase of synthesizing detailed results into a global view of the planet to “understand what it all might mean,” according to R. Stephen Saunders, Magellan project scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory here.

B-2 Contractors Cut Manufacturing Time

PALMDALE, CALIF. Northrop and its subcontractors are cutting B-2 manufacturing man-hours substantially as the last three test aircraft near completion and the program moves to a production phase. Aircraft No. 4 (AV-4), the second avionics test vehicle, is in final checkout and is scheduled for painting within the next few weeks.

Galileo Spacecraft Encounter With Gaspra Appears Successful

PASADENA, CALIF Telemetry indicates the Galileo spacecraft worked successfully during the first flyby ever of an asteroid, and should have stored on board 16 images of the body plus other scientific measurements. Navigation was so precise during the 1,600-km. flyby of Gaspra that project officials at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory here were considering late last week whether to transmit back one image in the next few weeks, about a year earlier than planned (AW&ST Oct. 28, p. 22).
