As Takeover Talk Mounts, Fokker Looks to New Jet

BERLIN With an eye to the U. S. market, Fokker Aircraft’s management has agreed to develop a 70-79-seat regional jet with a first flight in July, 1993. A formal launch is expected later this year. Fokker has been talking about a launch for more than a year and chose the ILA ’92 exhibition to edge closer to that decision.

Airbus Begins A319 Marketing Effort; British Aerospace Displays Jetstream 41

BERLIN Airbus Industrie has begun its full-scale marketing effort for the proposed A319 transport, and a program launch decision might be made by the end of the third quarter. The European consortium has not set a specific number of launch orders that are necessary before a go-ahead decision is made, according to Heribert Florsdorff, Airbus Industrie managing director.

BERLIN The Salyut Design Bureau is offering to jointly develop, manufacture and operate a 100-metric-ton orbital space factory that is based on the organization’s experience in designing heavyweight spacecraft. A scale model of the proposed mantended space factory was included in a Commonwealth of Independent States exhibit at the ILA ’92 show.

Mikoyan Testing Advanced Version Of MiG-29 Fighter

BERLIN Russia’s Mikoyan Design Bureau is flight testing an advanced version of its MiG-29 combat aircraft that incorporates electronic flight instruments, uses new airframe production techniques, and has improved aerodynamics. The modified aircraft has been designated MiG-33 by the design bureau, and is expected to be brought to the Farnborough air show in September for demonstration.

Air Force Fuels New Senate Doubts About Need for Navy’s AX Bomber

A senior official’s claim that the Air Force will be able to put 100 heavy bombers a day over very distant targets led Senate Armed Forces Committee chairman Sam Nunn (D.-Ga.) to again question the value of the AX attack aircraft. Air Force vice chief of staff, Gen. Michael P. C. Cams, said that with operational B-2s, upgraded B-ls and the remaining B-52s—a total of 217 flightready aircraft—the service could strike a foe with 100 heavy bombers “on a daily basis.”
