WORTIH PHILADELPHIA Investigators, armed with video tapes of the crash of a Bell/Boeing V-22 tiltrotor aircraft at Quantico, Va., last week, were hopeful that an early recovery of the aircraft from the Potomac River would permit them to determine the likely cause of the accident in a relatively short time.

Pentagon Narrows V-22 Mission, Reaffirms Medium-lift Need

WASHINGTON The Pentagon has narrowed the original requirements the V-22 Osprey was designed to meet, reaffirming its requirements for a new Marine Corps mediumlift replacement aircraft but dropping those for other missions. The less stringent requirements, coupled with the uncertainties caused by the crash of the second V-22 prototype in 13 months, have raised fresh doubts about the future of the tilt-rotor aircraft.

LOS ANGELES Project officials have stopped the Magellan Venus orbiter from sending science information in order to extend the life of the high-speed data transmitter for future radar imagery gathering. The “B” transponder is expected to be reactivated in September, when the spacecraft is expected to transmit data as it passes over unmapped areas.
