SEATTLE Continental Airlines, which emerged a second time from Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Apr. 30, has ordered and optioned a total of 190 Boeing transports in a massive fleet renewal plan. The deal has a potential value of $4.5 billion if all 98 options are exercised.

DC-X TO BEGIN STATIC TEST FIRINGS

WASHINGTON Static test firings of McDonnell Douglas Aerospace's DC-X are expected to begin this week, with flight evaluations of the single-stage rocket technology demonstrator to begin in June. The DC-X (Delta Clipper-Experimental) is installed on a pad at the White Sands Test Facility, N. M. for firings of its four Pratt & Whitney RL10A-5 liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen engines.

SEATTLE Boeing Defense and Space Group has briefed Defense Dept. and NASA officials on a manned, two-stage-to-orbit space launch system offering substantial near-term payload capability using an SST-like aircraft as a first stage. A MAJOR selling point of the TSTO concept is its political appeal to the Clinton Administration.

FIRST 1993 ARIANE MISSION LAUNCHES TWIN SATELLITE PAYLOAD

PARIS The Astra 1C communications space-craft, a Hughes 601 model built for a Luxembourg-based European direct broadcast consortium, is undergoing initial checkout in space following launch May 11 on a European Ariane 42L booster. The new three-ton spacecraft is to provide television service to Europe until at least the year 2008.

ARIANE 5 STUDIED FOR LUNAR RETURN

Preliminary evaluation work has been conducted on an uprated version of Europe's Ariane 5 heavy lift launcher that could be used in the lower-cost human Moon return mission proposed by General Dynamics. The evaluation work focused on installing two additional solid rocket motors to the basic Ariane 5 configuration.

C-17 PUT ON FINAL NOTICE AS PENTAGON MULLS OPTIONS

WASHINGTON The C-17 program faces termination this August unless the Pentagon gets concrete assurances from the Air Force, McDonnell Douglas and an independent review team that schedule, cost and technical problems are manageable. John Deutch, under secretary of Defense for acquisition, has launched a series of initiatives to get the program back on track while at the same time exploring alternatives to the C-17.
