SHUTTLE MAKES FIRST CAPE NIGHT LANDING

WASHINGTON After retrieving a German/U. S. astrophysics satellite, the Discovery and its crew of five capped nearly 10 days in space with the first night landing of a shuttle orbiter in Florida. Navy Capt. Frank L. Culbertson, Jr., Mission 51 commander, and William F. Readdy, the copilot, brought Discovery to a touchdown on the Kennedy Space Center's Runway 15 at 3:56 a.m. on Sept. 22.

KAMPHAENG SAEN AIR BASE, THAILAND The Royal Thai Air Force is expected to select Westinghouse Electronic Systems to construct an air defense radar system to protect the country's southern region. The contract for the Royal Thai Air Defense System (RTADS), including ground-support equipment, is valued at $180 million and will be the second of three regional systems approved as part of national air defense modernization.

PARIS France's aerospace companies will trim about 10,000 jobs this year, and similar cuts are planned for both 1994 and 1995. The French aerospace workforce is not expected to stabilize before 1996, when an airline industry recovery should be underway and the world economy should be stronger.
