Despite tighter hospital cost controls, a trend towards larger, twin-engined aeromedical services (AMS) helicopters likely will continue due to their faster speeds— which expands the radius of service— and ability to carry heavier, more sophisticated medical equipment.

WASHINGTON A solar-powered, eight-motor, unmanned flying wing, designed to stay aloft for weeks or months watching for ballistic missile launches or sampling air pollution, was delivered to Edwards AFB, Calif., late last week to begin flight testing.

PENTAGON TO FUND V-22 FOR SPECIAL OPS

WASHINGTON The Pentagon has asked the U. S. Special Operations Command to identify funding over the next five years to develop a special operations MV-X version of the V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft. Pentagon acquisition chief John M. Deutch has also asked that SOC and the Marine Corps submit revised operational requirements documents to the Joint Requirements Oversight Council in preparation for an upcoming Defense Acquisition Board (DAB) review of the V-22 program.

GEN. DOOLITTLE DIES AT AGE 96

LOS ANGELES Aviation pioneer James H. (Jimmy) Doolittle died Sept. 27 at the age of 96 in Pebble Beach, Calif. Doolittle's flying career touched many high points in the rapid development of aviation. He was a highly decorated war hero, receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor for leading the audacious April, 1942, B-25 bombing raid against Tokyo.
