JAPAN CONSIDERS T-2 REPLACEMENT TRAINER

TOKYO Japan's air force has begun procurement studies for an advanced supersonic trainer, but budget restraints make it unlikely that Japanese manufacturers will get the chance to develop a wholly new aircraft. Called AT-X, the trainer is proposed to replace the Mach 1.6 Mitsubishi T-2, which is expected to reach the end of its service life in 2002.
