CONGRESS TRIES TO DEFUSE AIM-9X/AAMRAM CONFLICT

WASHINGTON Congress is trying to back away from a confrontation over the next generation of U. S. Air Force and Navy short range air-to-air missiles with a conference committee compromise. The deal would appropriate about $39 million for the demonstration and evaluation of the U. S.-designed AIM-9X, provided that the British-designed ASRAAM gets a fair evaluation as a competitor.

WASHINGTON A $97-million Defense Dept.-CIA project to develop and field a long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle has taken on increased importance with the Pentagon's cancelation of its medium-range UAV program. Senior Pentagon officials have been trying to accelerate the tactical endurance UAV project.

WASHINGTON Promising no more redesigns, NASA has delivered to the White House a plan that would make Russia the newest—and indispensable—partner in its decade-long quest to build a space station. "This is it. Give us approval and we're going to go build a space station," NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin said.

PENTAGON JAST TEAM CANVASSES INDUSTRY

WASHINGTON The Pentagon has dispatched a team to canvass U. S. aerospace firms for ideas and concepts on what should be included in the new Joint Advanced Strike Technology program, which has come under fire for being unfocused. Team members, who started their rounds last week, will talk to airframe, engine and avionics manufacturers during the three-week fact-finding mission.

SHUTTLE CREW CONTINUES MEDICAL TESTS AFTER LANDING

EDWARDS AFB, CALIF. Columbia's crew will continue intensive medical tests for two weeks after their landing here Nov. 1 to study their readaptation to gravity. The astronauts were carried out of the orbiter on stretchers as part of the medical experiment that dominated Mission 58, and then were flown lying down to Johnson Space Center.

ISRAELI MISSILE BASE HIDDEN IN HILL

WASHINGTON A cave-studded hill about 14 mi. west of Jerusalem has been identified as a base for Jericho missiles, weapons that Western and Russian analysts believe are a key part of Israel's nuclear defense force. U. S. government officials confirmed the identification of the rocket launch facility, located about midway between Jerusalem and the Mediterranean coast.

AIR FORCE CUTS MILSTAR 2 BUY; FIRST SATELLITE SHIPPED TO CAPE

LOS ANGELES The Air Force plans to acquire one less Milstar 2 communications satellite, based upon Pentagon guidance from the military's Bottom-Up review, reducing the buy to two Milstar 1s and four Milstar 2s. The plan is in conjunction with a study for a follow-on satellite nicknamed "Milstar 3" that would use new technology to be lighter and less expensive than the current Milstar family.
