GKN BIDS FOR WESTLAND

LONDON A battle for control of U. K.-based West-land Group was set in motion last week after the aerospace company rejected a takeover bid from GKN Plc, a U. K.-based manufacturer of armored fighting vehicles. GKN, whose principal business activities are automotive driveline products and systems, has held 20.2% of Westland's ordinary stock since 1988 and agreed last week to acquire another 7.2% from United Technologies Corp. for 75 million pounds ($1 11 million) in cash.

NAVY H-60 CUTS POSE INDUSTRIAL BASE ISSUE

WASHINGTON The U. S. Navy's decision to curtail procurement of Sikorsky SH-60 and HH60 helicopters sooner than planned exacerbates helicopter industrial base concerns, which will now come to a head in 1997. Defense Secretary William Perry told the Senate Armed Services Committee there is enough work to sustain a viable helicopter industrial base up through that time.

CLINTON BUDGET CUTS NASA 'TO THE BONE'

WASHINGTON The Clinton Administration has proposed the first reduction in NASA's budget in two decades but managed to find room to initiate a new mission to Mars. The planned $14.3 billion in Fiscal 1995 spending, down from $14.55 billion this year, is an effective reduction of $650 million when inflation is taken into account.
