Orbital L-1011 Ready for First Launch

Orbital Sciences Corp. (OSC) has completed a final pathfinder mission in preparation for first operational use of its Lockheed L-1011 carrier aircraft and Pegasus XL booster in the planned launch of a U.S. Air Force satellite. The 767-lb. spacecraft—Space Test Experiment Platform (STEP) Mission 1— carries six scientific instruments which are intended to be placed in an 89 naut. mi. x490 naut. mi. orbit.

The U.S. Justice Dept, has joined a whistle-blower suit brought against General Electric Co. alleging engine testing fraud, even though the department is still investigating whether the accusations have any merit. The suit, originally filed by GE engineer Ian Johnson, alleges that the company made false statements to the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. military concerning electric bonding work on a wide variety of the engines it produces.
