PARIS European Space Agency astronaut Ulf Merbold, 53, is beginning nearly four weeks of research on the Russian Mir space station following his launch Oct. 4 on board the Soyuz TM-20 spacecraft with two Russian cosmonauts. Liftoff of the Soyuz SL-4 booster for the EuroMir mission occurred at Baikonur on time at 1:42 a.m., Moscow time.

LOS ANGELES The Magellan spacecraft will be commanded into a suicide mission this week to gather a final set of new data in the upper atmosphere of Venus before it is dragged down to hit the planet. The spacecraft is on its last legs, both technically and financially, and project officials have decided to command a descent starting at about 7:18 a.m. PDT on Oct. 11.

Your coverage of the French aerospace industry in the Sept. 26 issue was excellent. Did you, however, orientate the French flag incorrectly on the cover? The blue could have been to the left, if the flag post had been on the cover spine. The blue could have been on top, if the flag were hanging as a banner, but it is difficult to understand why you put the blue on the bottom.
