KENNEDY SPACE CENTER More than a dozen internal review teams have identified 5,900 jobs that could be cut from NASA's space shuttle program over the next several years to make shuttle operations more efficient without jeopardizing their safety, according the agency's head of spaceflight.

LOS ANGELES NASA'S new tracking and data relay satellite (TDRS) design, awarded in February to Hughes Space and Communications Co., is to add KAband service to the existing S/Ku-band service provided by the current TRW TDRS constellation, and increase S-band capacity.

CONTRACTORS PROPOSE LEASING FOR USAF

WASHINGTON Aerospace industry officials are examining new ways to finance the Pentagon's purchases of transport aircraft, in particular a lease-to-buy plan that would defer up-front purchase costs for three years or more. Such options are of interest because the Air Force is expected to release the official request for proposals (RFP) for the Non Developmental Airlift Aircraft (NDAA) in late March.

CANADA KEEPS STATION ROLE WHILE CUTTING SPACE FUNDS

BOSTON The budget for the Canadian Space Agency is being cut by 15% over 10 years, but the head of the agency says only 5% will come out of the international space station effort so that Canada will be able to keep its commitments to NASA. Mac Evans, Canadian Space Agency president, said the budget cuts just announced by the government are not a cause for any concern about Canada's commitment to the international space station.

NASA EVALUATES SEVEN RLV PROPOSALS

WASHINGTON NASA is evaluating seven proposals to develop two different reusable space launch vehicles, and hopes to name winners by the end of the month. For the larger reusable launch vehicle (RLV), the X-33, which could replace the space shuttle eventually, NASA received four proposals.
