U.K. FIRMS REPORT STRONG PROFITS

LONDON Key U.K. aerospace companies have reported substantially improved results in 1994 as cost-cutting and restructuring programs helped overcome continuing sluggishness in some important markets. British Aerospace moved into the black for the first time in four years with a pretax profit of 211 million pounds ($337.6 million), compared with a 257-million pound ($411.2-million) loss in 1993.

NEW MERGER LOOKS CERTAIN

NEW YORK Lockheed and Martin Marietta almost certainly will have the votes they need to officially merge their companies later this week. The approvals are likely to come despite objections by some pension-fund shareholders and shareholder advisory services to merger-related payouts to Martin executives. Their objections also include an "omnibus" incentive-compensation plan proposed for the new Lockheed Martin Corp.

JTIDS PASSES PRODUCTION HURDLE

HANSCOM AFB, MASS The Pentagon has approved the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS) for full-scale production in a streamlined review that followed a successful test by the Navy last summer. The Pentagon decision, which was made without committee and Defense Acquisition Board meetings to speed up the process, will result in the production of 319 additional JTIDS Class 2 and 2H terminals.
