Quick Titan 4 Turnaround Culminates in Milstar Launch

CAPE CANAVERAL AIR STATION Titan 4 team members here performed an unprecedented 24-hr. turnaround from a scrubbed launch to successfully orbit the Pentagon's newest, $1-billion secure communications satellite last week. Faced with persistent poor weather, U.S. Air Force officials abandoned their first attempt to launch a Titan 4 carrying the second Milstar high-priority communications satellite at 12:27 a.m. Nov. 5. The USAF and contractor launch teams then surmounted several hurdles to secure the Titan and its Centaur upper stage overnight, refuel it and launch it during a shortened window on Nov. 5. Liftoff of the vehicle, designated K-21, was from Pad 40 at 12:15 a.m. Nov. 6.
